On March 27, President Muyskens sent an e-mail to the Queens College student body announcing that Jim Stellar will be taking over as QC provost.
“I am absolutely delighted that Jim Stellar will be joining the college and
I look forward to working with him as an energetic and innovative colleague,” said Sue Henderson, vice president for institutional advancement, who chaired the selection committee.
After it was narrowed down to four possible candidates, the committee decided that Stellar would replace the current provost, Evangelos Gizis, who is retiring.
“I appreciate that so many took the time to meet the candidates and submit their thoughtful comments,” said Henderson.
The provost is also known as the chief academic officer of QC, responsible for all the academic programs, works above all the vice presidents and oversees all planning and the allocation of budgets.
Numerous offices, from the Office of Research and Graduate Studies to the Divisional Deans Office, report to the provost.
“I am impressed by the quality, mission and trajectory of the college and by the people I have met in the process of interviewing,” said Stellar. He described feeling “honored and humbled” to work alongside “deans, chairs and other leaders, as well as the faculty, students and staff at QC.”
Stellar comes to Queens after being the dean of arts and sciences at Northeastern University from 1998 to 2008.
He received his Ph.D. in biological psychology and post-doctorate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his bachelor’s from Ursinus College, in Collegeville, Pa.
He started out as an assistant professor at Harvard University in the psychology department and won the Phi Beta Kappa Outstanding Harvard Teacher of the Year Award in 1985.
“For 30 years, Dr. Stellar taught both large classes and small seminars, helping students to become enthusiastic and active learners,” said Muyskens.
He said he looks forward to a new chapter at QC.
