Jonze’s ex-girlfriend and Karen O, the lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, is hard to categorize. It's not an album of individual songs that are sprinkled around the movie, nor is it a score that complements the movie with atmospheric melodies. It's almost like listening to a full fledged Yeah Yeah Yeah’s album. It was like hearing remnants of the track, “Gold Lions”, from their second album, “Show Your Bones.” It's fairly soft and doesn’t kick you in the face like many of their tracks.
Tracks like, “All is Love” and “Rumpus” conjure up images of childhood memories that make you want to run around a tree until you're dizzy. Having listened to the album prior to the release of the film, I expected to hear some of Spike Jonze’s favorite bands, including Arcade Fire. It was a little odd to hear Karen O and Kids, but it fits and sounds amazing. In particular, their rendition of the Daniel Johnston song “Worried Shoes” sounds amazing with Karen O’s audio variation, but in the context of the movie, it has the power to bring you to tears.
The one downside, however, is that it isn’t very long on a continuous play through, and a few track are short score-like songs sound like fillers on this album.
