The Queen of Bluegrass

Spotlight on Rhonda Vincent

Recently, I was afforded the privilege to interview a gifted vocalist, guitarist, fiddle and mandolin player- the remarkable Rhonda Vincent. Dubbed by the Wall Street Journal as “the Queen of Bluegrass,” Vincent has been performing professionally for over four decades. Vincent has been named Female Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) a total of seven times, and in 2001 she was crowned the IBMA's Entertainer of the Year. Her latest album, “Destination Life,” has received rave reviews from music critics and has been nominated for a 2010 Grammy award for Best Bluegrass album; this marks Vincent's fourth nomination in this prestigious category. Wild Things

Wild Things Sound Grrrreaat

Where the Wild Things Are Soundtrack

The soundtrack to the film, written and performed by director Spike Jonze’s ex-girlfriend and Karen O, the lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, is hard to categorize. It's not an album of individual songs that are sprinkled around the movie, nor is it a score that complements the movie with atmospheric melodies. It's almost like listening to a full fledged Yeah Yeah Yeah’s album. It was like hearing remnants of the track, “Gold Lions”, from their second album, “Show Your Bones.” It's fairly soft and doesn’t kick you in the face like many of their tracks.

Mars Volta

Mars Volta

Coming out of a newly released album, The Mars Volta starts breaking in their new songs and gives everyone a bang for their buck. The first song was “A Fistful of Dollars.” Appreciation for Clint Eastwood? Maybe. Making you feel like you’re going to war is a little more appropriate, and who better to lead the war with his stage presence but Cedric Bixler Zavala?

Bowl

Brooklyn Bowl - A Little Fun For Everyone

Located at 61 Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn Bowl is the area’s hottest new music venue and bowling alley. It is the creation of Peter Shapiro, former owner of the concert venue Wetlands, and the Bromberg Brothers, who supply the food through Blue Ribbon. The space it occupies is a converted warehouse, and the atmosphere is urban, but casual. Dim lighting, dark wood and leather couches make it comfortable and inviting. Acts of all kinds take the stage while onlookers enjoy delicious food, drinks and bowling

Forever Young: Jay-Z Makes a Comeback

The Blueprint III

“The Blueprint 3” is a statement record. Jay-Z strongly makes his case as for why a 40-year-old rapper should still be relevant in a young man’s game. Throughout the album, Jay-z hastily snares lines such as: “people like ‘Hov take it back’; I’m doing better than before; why would I do that?” and “they think I’m out of shape; I guess I have to jog their memory.” Full story

A Conversation with Brooke White

While on American Idol, White “enjoyed working with everybody from the 'behind the scenes' people, to the other contestants. They were just amazing! I'm a 'people person.' I made a lot of great friendships with everyone” she says. For White, “Idol was amazing on one hand, but on the other hand extremely challenging. It was a big roller coaster ride, where you make a lot of sacrifices, but to receive really positive feedback and response for my new album, I’m extremely grateful.” Full story

Elliot Yamin

Spotlight on an Idol

Yamin, a Type-1 diabetic, currently serves as a spokesperson for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He has made the decision “to use 'American Idol' as a vehicle to bring awareness to my cause.” The hardest aspect of his job is keeping his diabetes under control while he is on the road. His proudest professional moments are his appearances on “American Idol” and his ability “to put out his own music.” Full story

Who the Hell Is: Electric Mistress

It began with a night on the town in San Diego. The plan that night was to see the Planet Rooth Gallery in North Park. Upon arriving, a sound was heard across the street — a sound familiar to us: a sound check. The music was coming from the Rubber Rose. Full story

Michael Jackson

Remember the Time

A QC Student Remembers the Gloved One

Jackson's continuation in the music business ended abruptly with his death from questionable medical probles on June 25, 2009. His death shocked the world. Countless tributes to “The King of Pop” took place shortly after the discovery of music’s great loss. The age range of Jackson’s fan base ranges between 5 to 95 years old. QC students nostalgically played Michael Jackson songs on Youtube during Free Hour. Janet Jackson preformed ‘Scream” (a duo she made with Michael during the 90’s) at the 2009 VMA’s in honor of her late brother. The performance was filled with emotion, and expressed Janet’s love for him. Full story
