When "American Idol 3" aired, there was one contestant that caused a great deal of buzz. That person was John Stevens.
The 17-year-old crooner was received with mixed reviews. Some people hated him, some people loved him. He now has a new album coming out called Red, which is sure to get the same mixed reviews.
Red is an extremely good album. Red starts off with Stevens' version of the classic "Come Fly with Me." Right from the start ,the listener can hear Stevens channeling his hero, Frank Sinatra. He belts out the tune like he was one of the old timers.
Stevens also tackles newer music, such as Maroon 5's "This Love." This is the only point in the album that isn't completely amazing. While Stevens does a good job with the song, it isn't a song that was meant to be sung in his style. Stevens' strong point is singing the classics and that shows on such tracks as "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and "Let's Fall in Love."
The real standout track on Red is "It Had to Be You." Stevens sings the classic song with such style that you can't help but sing along. On "It Had to Be You" especially, Stevens shows how much he truly loves these classic tunes through his performance. He sings every note with such care that you can't help but notice how much they mean to him and in turn, to you.
Red is not for everyone. Stevens sings in a very old style and that is not always well-received. However, if you are a fan of the old-time crooners, Red is something you will want to listen to over and over.
